Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Victoria Ocampo (1890-1979) was the founder of the mythic Sur magazine, one of the most influential literary journals of her time. Victoria was a patron of the arts and the first woman to be admitted to the Argentine Academy of Letters (1976).

She was “the quintessential Argentine woman” according to famed Argentine author Jorge Luis Borges. Her circle included some of the most relevant artists and intellectuals of the twentieth century. Victoria hosted Indira Gandhi, Igor Stravinsky and Antoine de Saint-Exupery at her luxurious Villa Ocampo in Buenos Aires. She also held a brief relationship with Rabindranath Tagore during the poet’s journey to South America.

Over four decades, Sur served as a cultural bridge between South America, North America and Europe. Among the writers published in Sur were Jorge Luis Borges, Simone de Beauvoir, Carl Jung, Yukio Mishima, Gabriela Mistral, Vladimir Nabokov, Silvina Ocampo, Virginia Woolf, Jean Cocteau, André Gide, T.S. Eliot, Albert Camus, James Joyce, William Faulkner, Adolfo Bioy Casares and Federico García Lorca.
