Ma Nishtana

Temples | Sacred | Incense

With a flood of incense fragrances on the market, many of them don’t do this sacred note justice. Incense may be buried amongst other materials, too simplistic, or often, overwhelmed by acrid smoke.

Ma Nishtana succeeds in lifting the frankincense to stand tall and proud in a crowd of its loyal supporters. With a clarity that’s on par with the greats like Comme des Garçons’ Avignon (Bertrand Duchaufour) or Armani Privé’s Bois d’Encens (Michel Almairac), Ma Nishtana is worthy of high praise. Since Prin Lomros has only been creating fragrance since around 2012, this is nothing short of a masterful achievement for a self-taught perfumer.

The first thing that is noticed once Ma Nishtana is sprayed is how the spices seem to meld with the frankincense to become one. Aldehydes add their sparkle and lift to this cluster; now becoming a supernova of luminous incense and crackling spice notes. Frankincense’s faithful sidekick myrrh brings a darker dimension, though, due to Prin’s thoughtful blending, the brightness of frankincense is never eclipsed by the brooding myrrh.

With time, subtle whiffs of smoke remind the wearer that a flame is necessary to express incense’s magical, sacred qualities. As the smoke rises from the censer, Ma Nishtana throws handfuls of cardamom, pepper and nutmeg into the embers, which slowly burn down to charred woods. This is a simultaneously meditative and quietly thought-provoking fragrance that pays honour to frankincense, as cultures have for thousands of years.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
