OUR VERDICT

Incense | Pine | Holy

After Io Non Ho Mani, Filippo Sorcinelli returns to Senigallia with Reliqvia, which hosts many important relics of the passion of Christ, many housed within the Church of the Cross, considered one of the jewels of the Italian Baroque and late Renaissance. Sorcinelli’s connection to this place is well-defined, and serves as the organist and artistic director to this oratory, which dates back to 1608.

Reliqvia speaks of walls clad in golden wood, finely decorated with carvings and reliefs, that speaks of the incensed steps towards the great high altar, like a golden embroidery, inside which the statue of the dead Christ is kept; a wooden work of the Seventeenth century and made visible only once a year.

In this work, wood notes are exalted and enrobed in peaty incense smoke. Indeed, this is an old sacred space captured in scent, used for many centuries, saturated with the aromas of religious history. In its frenetic movement, with its flash of acerbic blackcurrant, sweet orange, and spices, Reliqvia quickly engulfs us in holy smoke - incense, tobacco and woods together - to eventually rest, in meditative stillness, on the soft whisper glow of pine and sandalwood.
