Ever since the creation of Guerlain's classic Fruity Chypre Mitsouko in 1919, fruity notes have grown in popularity, perhaps peaking in recent times with the Fruity Floral genre.

Nowadays, with the advent of more adventurous niche perfumery, fruity notes can be found in woody fragrances, or even the avant-garde.

Since most fruits do not produce essential oils, fruity notes are either replicated via synthetics or similar smelling naturals.
